A Hidden Forest Full of Monsters, A Genius Middle Finger, and the Best Place to Play Pinball and Wash Your Clothes: All That And More as Tonight as We Welcome Dylan Thuras, co-founder of Atlas Obscura.
Walk Out Tune ~ They Might Be Giants ~ Istanbul
Dylan's pursuit of the unusual began as a teenager exploring abandoned buildings in the mid-west and eventually took him and his wife Michelle to Budapest for a year, to exploring Eastern Europe's obscure and wondrous locales.
After co-producing an evening of wonders with Joshua Foer, the two began hatching plans for their next big project. Creating a way for curious travelers to find the hidden wonders of the world seemed like a heck of a lot of fun, and the Atlas Obscura was born.

In this episode, Clint describes his trip to the OP to meet the members of the Olympic Project during one of their expeditions. Included is a Class A encounter story, details about the hunt for DNA from the Nest Site, and a lengthy discussion about the amazing people involved with the group.
"I cannot possibly thank Derek, James, Shane, David, Shelly, Cindy and Barb enough. As well as all the others who welcomed me. The Olympic Project is a first class organization from top to bottom. Their focus is on hard science and research in their quest for answers. It's about family and friendship. I learned more in 2 days with those guys and gals than I'd ever amassed on my own. I can't recommend enough to everyone and anyone to jump at the opportunity to attend an expedition. Truly one of the highlights of my travels so far. Thanks again...I'm honored to call those involved friends." ~ Clint
“There is something primal about being outside when, over a period of less than an hour, it gets dark, the light gets very eerie, the colors change. You know that something strange is going on, Then,
abruptly, it gets 10,000 times darker in the last minute. You look in the sky, and there’s this strange stuff going on. There’s a diamond ring surrounding this dark hole in the sky. Everybody who sees it is overwhelmed.”
On August 21st, 2017 a Total Solar Eclipse will travel coast to coast across the United States for first time since 1918 (99 years), casting a 70 mile wide shadow that will turn day to night and back to day again in a matter of minutes for those directly in its path. This extremely rare event has been hailed the “Great American Eclipse.”
After having to wait 99 years for the “Great American Eclipse”, a second Total Solar Eclipse will cross America less than 7 years later, on April 8, 2024 to be exact. To be even more exact, on April 8, 2024 that Total Solar Eclipse will pass directly over Dallas, TX of all places, birthplace of the Helping Friendly Book Club.
Is this random? Is this the opposite of random? Words fall short.
Inspired by the visionary genius of Francis Bacon, and to commemorate these two precisely random/notrandom astrological events, the Helping Friendly Book Club is going to bury a Time Capsule during the first eclipse, and dig it up when the second eclipse blacks out the sun in Dallas in 2024, 7 years later.
